Graduation certificates do something most certificates don't: they confer a credential. The wording has to name the exact degree or program, identify the conferring authority, and order those elements correctly — or the document reads as decorative rather than official. Get the conferral verb wrong and you've made a souvenir, not a credential.
University degree conferral
The Board of Trustees of Westbridge University, upon recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering, hereby confers upon Amara Okonkwo the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, with all the rights, privileges, and responsibilities thereunto appertaining. Conferred this 14th day of June, 2026. Diploma No. WBU-2026-04188.
High school diploma
Be it known that Daniel Reyes has satisfactorily completed the prescribed course of study at Lincoln Heights High School, Class of 2026, and is therefore awarded this Diploma, with all honors and privileges pertaining thereto. Granted this 22nd day of May, 2026, by authority of the Board of Education.
Coding bootcamp graduation
This is to certify that Priya Shah has successfully graduated from the Full-Stack Web Development Program at Northpoint Coding Academy, a 24-week intensive course comprising 720 instructional hours, and has demonstrated mastery of the program's final capstone requirements. Awarded June 7, 2026. Cohort FSW-31.
Preschool graduation
Maya Thompson is officially a Sunflower Class Graduate of Little Sprouts Preschool, Class of 2026 — moving on to kindergarten with a full heart, big questions, and excellent gluing skills.
Homeschool co-op
Look at you. Eli Park finished eighth grade with the Northshore Homeschool Co-op — three years of read-alouds, science fairs, and one truly memorable volcano. Onward to high school. Class of 2026.
Community workshop series
Rosa Martinez — Graduate of the Eastside Community Center Bread-Baking Program, Spring 2026 cohort. Twelve weeks. Sixty loaves. One certified baker.
Higher education
Saint Aldwyn College, by the authority vested in its Board of Regents, hereby confers upon Marcus Whitfield the degree of Master of Public Administration, magna cum laude, with all honors, rights, and privileges thereunto appertaining. Awarded May 18, 2026.
In higher education, the conferral clause is non-negotiable. The verb "confers," the named authority, the exact degree title, and any Latin honors must appear in their registered form — registrars and credential verification services check for these.
Professional training and bootcamps
Brightline Design Academy certifies that Jordan Lee has graduated from the UX Design Career Program, completing 480 contact hours, 12 portfolio projects, and the final mentor-reviewed capstone, between September 2025 and May 2026.
Bootcamps don't grant accredited degrees, so the wording works harder to communicate substance: hours, projects, and assessment milestones. Avoid "degree" — say "program" or "course of study."
Early childhood education
Tiny Acorns Preschool is delighted to recognize Sofia Martinez as a Graduate of the Pre-Kindergarten Class of 2026 — ready for kindergarten, full of curiosity, and very, very proud.
Preschool graduations are emotional documents for parents. Lean into warmth, name the next step ("ready for kindergarten"), and keep institutional language to a minimum.
Northpoint Coding Academy just wrapped its 24-week full-stack cohort. Eighteen students are on stage in a converted warehouse in Austin, families in folding chairs, the lead instructor about to read names. Each graduate gets a printed certificate that will end up on LinkedIn within forty-eight hours and in at least three hiring manager inboxes within a week. The wording needs to convince a recruiter who has never heard of Northpoint that this is a real credential.
Northpoint Coding Academy hereby certifies that Jamal Carter has successfully graduated from the Full-Stack Web Development Program, a 24-week intensive comprising 720 instructional hours of curriculum in JavaScript, React, Node.js, and PostgreSQL, and has satisfied all capstone and assessment requirements of the program. Awarded June 14, 2026. Cohort FSW-31. Verification: northpoint.dev/verify/FSW-31-JC.
Three template styles suit graduation certificates well. Classic bordered templates with a centered seal area work for universities and high schools, where institutional gravitas matters. Modern minimal layouts with strong typography suit bootcamps and professional programs that want to feel current rather than ceremonial. Playful illustrated templates — animals, suns, rainbows — fit preschool and elementary graduations where the document is also a keepsake. Browse the full range on the Graduation Certificate template gallery, or see our curated picks in the best free graduation certificate templates listicle.
Pick the wording that matches what you're actually conferring, then drop it into a layout that fits the occasion. The graduation certificate template gallery has formats for every program type, and the graduation certificate examples for ceremonies page shows finished documents with real wording in place.
