Graduation Certificate Wording Examples (Formal and Casual)

Graduation certificates do something most certificates don't: they confer a credential. The wording has to name the exact degree or program, identify the conferring authority, and order those elements correctly — or the document reads as decorative rather than official. Get the conferral verb wrong and you've made a souvenir, not a credential.

Higher education

In higher education, the conferral clause is non-negotiable. The verb "confers," the named authority, the exact degree title, and any Latin honors must appear in their registered form — registrars and credential verification services check for these.

Professional training and bootcamps

Brightline Design Academy certifies that Jordan Lee has graduated from the UX Design Career Program, completing 480 contact hours, 12 portfolio projects, and the final mentor-reviewed capstone, between September 2025 and May 2026.

Bootcamps don't grant accredited degrees, so the wording works harder to communicate substance: hours, projects, and assessment milestones. Avoid "degree" — say "program" or "course of study."

Early childhood education

Tiny Acorns Preschool is delighted to recognize Sofia Martinez as a Graduate of the Pre-Kindergarten Class of 2026 — ready for kindergarten, full of curiosity, and very, very proud.

Preschool graduations are emotional documents for parents. Lean into warmth, name the next step ("ready for kindergarten"), and keep institutional language to a minimum.

Writing Tips

• Use "confers the degree of" only when an accredited institution is granting an accredited degree. For bootcamps, training programs, and informal graduations, use "has graduated from" or "has successfully completed the program of study in."
• Name the exact program or degree as it's registered — "Bachelor of Science in Computer Science," not "BS Comp Sci." Recruiters and registries match on the full title.
• Include the conferring authority. A graduation certificate without a named board, dean, principal, or director reads as a participation document, not a conferral.
• Specify cohort or class year ("Class of 2026," "Cohort FSW-31"). Graduation is fundamentally about marking a group's passage through time, and the year anchors the credential.
• For unaccredited programs, substantiate with specifics: hours, projects, assessments. Vague graduation wording from an unknown issuer triggers skepticism.

Mistakes to Avoid

• Writing "Certificate of Completion" wording on a graduation certificate. Completion marks finishing a single course; graduation marks conferral of a credential after a program. The two documents serve different purposes and the wording shouldn't be interchangeable.
• Using "confers the degree of" when no degree is being conferred. A 12-week bootcamp graduation certificate that claims to "confer a degree" is a misrepresentation that can hurt graduates in background checks.
• Omitting the class year or cohort. A graduation certificate without a year is missing one of its defining elements and looks generic.
• Forgetting Latin honors or distinction when they apply. Cum laude, magna cum laude, summa cum laude, "with distinction," and "with honors" belong directly after the degree title — leaving them off shortchanges the graduate.
